Address of the Rector of St. Petersburg Mining University, Professor Vladimir Litvinenko

Dear participants of the Symposium!

Today, it is impossible to imagine the design and operation of a mining enterprise without geodynamic zoning of a deposit, detailed analysis of the rock mechanics, and geophysical analysis of rock massif geologicical structure. Huge social responsibility falls on geotechnical engineers when operating hudro-technical structures, subways, developing deposits under cities and water bodies. The horizons of mining operations sink to deeper levels from year to year, that significantly complicates mining and necessitates the development of unconventional technical, science-intensive solutions.

Given the rapid growth of the industry requirements, there is an obvious need for maximum intensification of research activities activities, which enable to provide professional assessment and build science-based predictions in various industrial sectors to ensure the economic perfomance and national development.

On behalf of the Russian Organizing Committee, I am glad to welcome you at the EUROCK 2018 International European Symposium, which is held in Russia for the first time with the support of the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) at the premises of St. Petersburg Mining University. The subject of the symposium “Geomechanics and Geodynamics of Rock Masses” covers all high-tech solutions and advanced engineering developments in the field of geomechanics from theory to application in practice.

St. Petersburg Mining University (St. Petersburg, Russia) possesses all up-to-date material and technical facilities and a developed infrastructure that allows to hold international events at the highest level, it is located in the cultural center and in the second largest city in the country.

The scientific agenda of the event includes qualification upgrading courses and key lectures by world-class experts in geomechanics and geodynamics, a plenary session and parallel sessions. Traditionally, in the framework of the Symposium, an exhibition will be held where all mining companies and organizations can demonstrate their scientific and technical achievements.

I am sure that the EUROCK 2018 Symposium will make a great contribution to the promotion of scientific and technical cooperation and development of geomechanics as a science in the mining industry. I would like to wish all the participants of the Congress to have productive work, interesting professional interaction, and to get insight into the educational and scientific capacity of the Mining University and its architectural and historical complex, including the Mining Museum!
